Roopkund trek, in the state of Uttarakhand in India, is a well-known glacial lake. This lake is famous because of more than five hundred skeletons of humans that are found at the edge of the lake. It is situated in the Himalayas and rests at an altitude of nearly 4,800 meters. Roopkund is in the Chamoli district of Garhwal. It is considered as one of the best trails for trekking in Garhwal region. It is closer to hill stations like Nainital and Kathgodam. At a distance of 217 km from Nainital and 235 km from Kathgodam, Roopkund is one of the chief adventure attractions for people in the country and for the people who love trekking. Roopkund, which is in the lap of Trishul massif is also known as the ‘mystery lake’. The best time to visit here is May Last Week-June and September-October.
Roopkund trekking begins in the town of Loharjung and takes you through mountains replete with rich biodiversity and picturesque surroundings. Deep virgin forests, gurgling brooks, breath-taking campsites, miles of undulating meadows, snow and ice, and the taste of a great adventure as you climb from 8,000 ft to 16,000 ft in 8 days. The Roopkund trek is also called Skeleton Trek because of the presence of different skeletons in and near the lake. The lake is bounded by snow clad mountains and rock-strewn glaciers. Trekking here is an adventurous journey which passes via various exotic and beautiful locations. As you trek towards the lake, you would see lush green grassy land and conifer forest ranging towards the fall of hills. After that, the trek takes its way along the Pindar River. You can take pleasure in the natural and lush green beauty of the surroundings with the pleasant breeze that blows all around you, giving a soothing effect to your senses.

Post breakfast we will start our trek towards Didna village. You start climbing from an altitude of 10500 feet and trek through a picturesque forest comprising Himalayan cedar and oak trees. This trail is a combination of steep ascents and descents. The trail through lovely oak and rhododendron forests is a pleasure for the eyes. We will reach Didna Village by evening and camp there. Trek from Loharjung to Didna village is around 8 km.
After having breakfast in the morning, we will start our trek towards Ali Bugyal. The hike today will be through thick forests and open grasslands for around 5 kms and will take around 3 to 4 hours to compete. You will reach Ali Bugyal where you will find acres of open meadows. Camp overnight at Ali Bugyal with bonfire and dinner.
Today we start from Bhagwabhasa and summit Roopkund lake @15969 feet. The oxygen level in the air goes down as you climb uphill by the minute, so ascend as slow as possible, to acclimatize better. There will be snow on this trail. The nights get tremendously cold and windy so it’s better if you keep warm clothes in handy. Roopkund Lake is a 5 km moderate up-hill climb from Bhagwabasa. The climb towards the end of the trail to reach the Roopkund Lake is steep. It would take about 3 – 3½ hours to reach the lake. A further climb of around 20 minutes takes you to the highest point of Roopkund Lake Trek, i.e. Junargali. Then we head back to our campsite at Patharnachauni. The views from the alpine camp at Patharnachauni extends west across the main Himalayan range as far as Gangotri.
