Overview

Roopkund trek, in the state of Uttarakhand in India, is a well-known glacial lake. This lake is famous because of more than five hundred skeletons of humans that are found at the edge of the lake. It is situated in the Himalayas and rests at an altitude of nearly 4,800 meters. Roopkund is in the Chamoli district of Garhwal. It is considered as one of the best trails for trekking in Garhwal region. It is closer to hill stations like Nainital and Kathgodam. At a distance of 217 km from Nainital and 235 km from Kathgodam, Roopkund is one of the chief adventure attractions for people in the country and for the people who love trekking. Roopkund, which is in the lap of Trishul massif is also known as the ‘mystery lake’. The best time to visit here is May Last Week-June and September-October.

Roopkund trekking begins in the town of Loharjung and takes you through mountains replete with rich biodiversity and picturesque surroundings. Deep virgin forests, gurgling brooks, breath-taking campsites, miles of undulating meadows, snow and ice, and the taste of a great adventure as you climb from 8,000 ft to 16,000 ft in 8 days. The Roopkund trek is also called Skeleton Trek because of the presence of different skeletons in and near the lake. The lake is bounded by snow clad mountains and rock-strewn glaciers. Trekking here is an adventurous journey which passes via various exotic and beautiful locations. As you trek towards the lake, you would see lush green grassy land and conifer forest ranging towards the fall of hills. After that, the trek takes its way along the Pindar River. You can take pleasure in the natural and lush green beauty of the surroundings with the pleasant breeze that blows all around you, giving a soothing effect to your senses.

Itinerary

Day 1
Kathgodam to Loharjung
After you arrive in Kathgodam, our representative will pick you up from station and proceed towards Loharjung. From Kathgodam, you will travel through the scenic hilly routes in order to reach your destination. On arriving in this little village, you can check out the village and stay overnight so that we can start our trek next day
Day 2
Loharjung to Didna village

Post breakfast we will start our trek towards Didna village. You start climbing from an altitude of 10500 feet and trek through a picturesque forest comprising Himalayan cedar and oak trees. This trail is a combination of steep ascents and descents. The trail through lovely oak and rhododendron forests is a pleasure for the eyes. We will reach Didna Village by evening and camp there. Trek from Loharjung to Didna village is around 8 km.


Day 3
Didna village to Bedni Bugyal

After having breakfast in the morning, we will start our trek towards Ali Bugyal. The hike today will be through thick forests and open grasslands for around 5 kms and will take around 3 to 4 hours to compete. You will reach Ali Bugyal where you will find acres of open meadows. Camp overnight at Ali Bugyal with bonfire and dinner.

Day 4
Bedni Bugyal to Bhagwabhasa
Today we will go on a trek which is an easy climb following by a gradual descent to Pathar Nachauni which takes about 4 hours to complete via Bedni Bugyal. On a clear day, the view from this trail is very beautiful followed by a steep ascent to Kalu Vinayak Temple and then a gradual descent to Bhagwabhasa. Just as we finish the climb from Ghora Lotani, we’ll reach Kalu Vinayak Temple, where there’s a shrine of Lord Ganesh. Bhagwabhasa is 2 km from here, following an easy, gradual descent. We will camp at Bhagwabhasa for the night.
Day 5
Bhagwabhasa to Roopkund Summit & back to Patharnachuni

Today we start from Bhagwabhasa and summit Roopkund lake @15969 feet. The oxygen level in the air goes down as you climb uphill by the minute, so ascend as slow as possible, to acclimatize better.  There will be snow on this trail. The nights get tremendously cold and windy so it’s better if you keep warm clothes in handy. Roopkund Lake is a 5 km moderate up-hill climb from Bhagwabasa. The climb towards the end of the trail to reach the Roopkund Lake is steep. It would take about 3 – 3½ hours to reach the lake. A further climb of around 20 minutes takes you to the highest point of Roopkund Lake Trek, i.e. Junargali. Then we head back to our campsite at Patharnachauni. The views from the alpine camp at Patharnachauni extends west across the main Himalayan range as far as Gangotri.

Day 6
Patharnachuni to Wan –Drive to Loharjung
After having our breakfast, we start our 10km trek which will take around 6-7 hours all the way to Wan and drive to Loharjung. The trek is via the meadows of Bedni Bugyal and then by the forests over Wan. We will stop to take in the view at Ghairoli Patal, from where we will get astounding views of Mt. Trishul. From the bridge, it’s a half hour climb to Wan and then an hour’s drive to Loharjung and camp there for the night
Day 7
Loharjung to Kathgodam
After breakfast, we start our drive from Loharjung in the morning. It will take around 11 hours to reach Kathgodam. Expected to reach Kathgodam by 7 pm and plan your onward journey back. Trek ends here with beautiful memories to take back home.

Things to Carry

Necessities:


  1. Trekking shoes **: Trekking shoes with good grip and ankle support is compulsory for the trek. Please ensure that the trekking shoes are not new and used by the trekker prior to the trek. The trail is slippery and requires you to walk through rocks and boulders so good grip and water resistance shoe is necessary.  Do keep an extra floater in case of rain and for use in camps.
  2. Backpack (50-70 litres) **: A backpack with comfortable straps and a supporting frame is very important as you have to carry it on your own during the trek. Invest in a good backpack that is lightweight and comfortable to carry on long treks. 
  3. Daypack (20 litres): Keep a daypack incase you off load your backpack during the trek for your essential day items.
  4. Torch or Headlamp **: Please bring a torch or headlamp for all treks.
  5. Cutlery: Carry a spoon, mug and a lunch box. We insist on trekkers getting their own cutlery for hygiene reasons and for packed lunch.
  6. Sunglasses **: Invest in a good pair of sunglasses as you are going to be out in the sun for most of day. If you are trekking in snow it will be a mandatory as it protects you from snow blindness.
  7. Two water bottles **: 1 litre each for water during the trek.

Clothes and Other accessories


  1. Warm jacket and Sweater (couple of them if you feel more susceptible to cold) 
  2. Thermals: Carry thermals to keep yourself warm in the camp.Trek pants (2)  for daily use during the trek which are light and comfortable.
  3. Collared Shirts (3-4) Full sleeves and quick dry so that it prevents sunburn on the arms and neck area. 
  4. Poncho: Poncho is very important when you are trekking in monsoon season to protect you from the rain. You can rent one from us @ INR 50 per day.
  5. Cap: To protect your hair and face from the scorching sun carry a cap.
  6.  Synthetic gloves for your hands as it will protect your hands from water, snow and keep you dry and warm.
  7. Socks (2 pair) + Wollen socks(2 pair)  for keep you warm in the camps.
  8. Trekking pole: You should carry your own trekking poles for the steep uphills and downhills. You can carry them or rent one from us @ INR 50 per day
  9. Toiletries: Sunscreen **, moisturiser, lip balm, toilet paper, toothbrush, toothpaste, hand sanitiser, wet wipes and tissues. 
  10. Plastic covers: While packing, use plastic bags to compartmentalise things and carry few extra plastic bags for wet clothes and to bring back your non biodegradable material back. Mountains are the source of water and life on this planet. Please try and keep it clean and healthy.

Camp overnight at Ali Bugyal with bonfire and dinner.

Day 4
Bedni Bugyal to Bhagwabhasa
Today we will go on a trek which is an easy climb following by a gradual descent to Pathar Nachauni which takes about 4 hours to complete via Bedni Bugyal. The trek is via the meadows of Bedni Bugyal and then by the forests over Wan. We will stop to take in the view at Ghairoli Patal, from where we will get astounding views of Mt. Trishul. From the bridge, it’s a half hour climb to Wan and then an hour’s drive to Loharjung and camp there for the night
Day 7
Loharjung to Kathgodam
